I'm sure someone on here has had some luck with certain breeds.
Egg layers will lay all year round.
I haven't had any personal experiences with egg layers myself, but I do know that Leghorns, Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, the like all lay quite well.

My Thai/Shamo hens are quite broody if they start to lay eggs. I know Silkies become quite broody also. If I remember correctly, Brahmas and Cochins are pretty good too.
